Postpartum Hair Loss: What No One Tells New Mothers

Many new mothers panic when handfuls of hair appear weeks after delivery. In most cases, this is telogen effluvium triggered by hormonal shifts — and it is usually temporary.

Why it happens

During pregnancy, elevated hormones prolong the growth phase. After delivery, levels drop and follicles synchronously enter shedding. This often peaks around months 3–6 postpartum.

When to seek help

What helps

Gentle hair care, adequate protein and iron (if deficient on labs), stress support, and patience. Medical treatments — including PRP when appropriate — are considered after examination, especially if shedding is severe or prolonged.
